Media Blasting

Leuthold Sandblasting can use nearly any media and any grit, from fine (115) to course (30/50).  Different media is appropriate for different projects.  We can do a test blast using various media and air pressures to figure out what is the right solution for your project.

For example after testing we found 115 grit nickel slag was the best solution for cleaning tong and groove ceiling pictured to the right.  What we wanted is for the surface to be cleared of sealant with minimal damage to the wood. The fine grit was able to do the job with minimal impact.

Here is a list of some of the media that we could use for your project:

Walnut Shell

Ground walnut shells are a type of abrasive blast media used for cleaning.  We use walnut shell if a soft blast and biodegradable media is needed.  The walnut shells are ground to various sizes from coarse to extra fine depending on the application.

Additional Information

  • Biodegradable
  • non-toxic
  • environmental safe
  • silica free
  • 3-4 Mohs hardness

Starblast blasting abrasives are a loose blend of uniformly sized coarse and fine staurolite sands that have clean, rounded surfaces.  We generally use it for applications that require a more aggressive abrasive like etching signs on granite.

Additional Information

  • Less than 1% free crystalline silica
  • 6.5-7.0 Mohs

Nickel Slag

Nickel Slag is made from a by-product of nickel production. It is an ideal abrasive for general industrial blast cleaning. It is very hard so can come in small grits, and can be used to etch hard stone like granite.

Additional Information

  • Contain no free silica
  • Environmentally safe
  • Moisture free
  • Faster cutting due to its durability and sharp angular edges
  • 7+ Mohs

Glass Bead

This general purpose blast media is recommended for applications where you want to remove debris without damaging the item's surface. Glass bead media works well on soft metals like aluminum and brass as well as plastic

Additional Information

  • Can be recycled
  • Chemically inert
  • No free silica
  • Mostly used in blast cabinets
  • 5.5 Mohs

Crushed Glass

Crushed Glass is an alternative recycled glass sandblasting media that is safe, clean, and its use directly benefits the environment.

Additional Information

  • Made from recycled glass
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Non-reactive and inert
  • Less that 1% free silica

Coal Slag

Coal Slag is a low dusting, low free silica blasting abrasive.  Applicable for light blasting requiring a clean surface and minimum anchor profile.

Additional Information

  • A recycled material
  • Low free silica
  • Environmentally safe
